Sounding The Seventh Trumpet (2001) "Warmness On The Soul"

[Reprinted as written by Avenged Sevenfold]

Your hazel green tint eyes watching every move I make.
And that feeling of doubt, it's erased.
I'll never feel alone again with you by my side.
You're the one, and in you I confide. And we have gone through good and bad times.
But your unconditional love was always on my mind.
You've been there from the start for me.
And your loves always been true as can be.
I give my heart to you.
I give my heart, cause nothing can compare in this world to you.

In all these songs, so far, I see a spiritual layer. Whether or not the poet intended these meanings is a good question -- and yet artists understand that truly good art carries its freight in meaning. It carries the artist's voice, yet it is expansive enough to resonate with many voices and many meanings. Good art speaks to you.

There is no question that these lyrics carry Biblical imagery, and the poets themselves freely admit to that. Yet tucked in amongst heavy laden poems of anguish and anger is this warm and sensuous gem of love.

Is there a hidden meaning in finding unconditional love, and a deep union of hearts, between cries of rage and betrayal, between the torn souls of those who fear they are damned yet long for redemption from the One under whose wrath they defiantly choose to remain?

All of us long to be truly known and loved, all of us long for the faithfulness of someone who will always be there for us, who will always be on our side, who will love us at our filthiest, who will forgive us every time, who will believe the best in us and defend us to the end. The lover of our soul, that's who we want.

Who loves you like that? Who do you love like that?

None of us is capable of it without help. Supernatural help.

[Many believe this song was written by Matt (M Shadow) for his long term girlfriend: Valary Di Benedetto, whom he's been dating since the 6th grade

  1. How do you experience God's unconditional love in a tangible, real way? It sounds nice, but seems so far and distant in reality.

  2. There's no trick or sudden change you can make to experience God's love in a tangible or real way if you are already a follower of Christ.** I don't say this to be unkind or harsh, but to give you hope: God's love is already there, tangible and real. The reason (in my experience) that His love feels distant is because we haven't learned to recognize that love in the midst of the incredible pain, suffering, and trials we may be going through.

I'd like to share my experience with God as the "Lover of our soul," one of His many names. It's a little long, but please bear with me...

When I was a college freshman, I decided I was tired of being the good Christian girl and the obedient daughter. I was madly in love with a young man, who loved me madly back. I chose to ignore God and to find my source of love in my human lover instead of in my heavenly Lover.

When that human relationship destroyed itself, I was furious at God for taking away what I felt was the most important thing in my life. Instead of looking back to Him for a wellspring of love, I let myself be seduced into the arms of a man who promised romance but wanted nothing but my body. He left me hurt, broken, and desperate for true love - love I had always known was from God, but didn't want. I had trouble remembering what God's love looked like. I couldn't even see it. I was heartbroken, torn to shreds, and it seemed like I was in a deep pit with no light, slipping further and further into the darkness.

But God never left, and neither did His love. I never was able to see it until I re-learned how to look at Him and talk to Him. As trite as it might sound, the entire Bible was written from Him to you. I've heard the Bible called the ultimate love letter, and in a way, it is. The more you immerse yourself in that letter, the more you talk to God - and it's a real relationship, sometimes complete with screaming, yelling, weeping, and all the mess of emotion that lives within us - the more you'll be able to see God's acts of love for what they really are.

Sometimes it's a parking space on a day where everything seems to be going wrong. Sometimes it's a friend who creates a safe place for you to hide in and who defends you from those you are hiding from. And sometimes it's a verse coming to mind which reminds you of how much you are loved (but they can't come to mind if you don't know them). God is perfectly good, and He knows just how to express His love to show you His comfort and peace.

You may not be in the place I was when I couldn't see God's love. But no matter where you are, the same thing holds true - start looking for God and His love, and He has promised that He will reveal Himself to you. If you're lost on where to start looking for Him, I suggest the Psalms. Often the psalmists cry out from the pits of despair, feeling as if God has abandoned them to death and destruction, and always God answers with love and deliverance. I know that God will answer you and reveal all the ways - tangible and intangible, and very real - in which He is loving you.

    Grace be with you.

**If you are not a believer in Christ, then though God loves you, He is not yet pouring out His full love on you, because you are not yet one of His children. (If this is you, I know that He is calling you). The book of John is a good book to get started on, as it details the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. God's unconditional love and forgiveness are being offered to you - held out, stretched out, and presented as a complete gift - and to experience the love that knows know bounds, all that you must do is tell God that you understand that you are imperfect, deserving the death penalty for the injuries you have done to others, that you know that He died (and lives!) for you, and that you are willing to accept His gift of life by becoming his adopted child. He loves you more than you can imagine, and no matter how far away you may imagine Him, He will always be right there for you, no matter what.
